In life, everything we have ever seen,
heard, read, smelled, tasted or experienced has been recorded in our
long-term memory. Those memories are stored in our subconscious mind.
Forensic Hypnosis, done properly, will bring details to the surface.
Such details can be the remembrance of facial feature, a scar or tattoo
or a license plate number. Other uses of forensic hypnosis my simply
be to remember the placement of a lost article. Many legal cases have
been solved by forensic hypnosis techniques.
During hypnosis, people can speak when
they are asked to, and the recall that they have of
details and events is amazing. In crimes where investigative leads have been exhausted,
hypnosis is utilized to retrieve memories of potential witnesses and
victims. Information retrieved through hypnosis and corroborated through
further investigation can be used in the investigation and introduced
in court proceedings in most states.
Experts in this field have proven both
that it is possible to restore memory through hypnosis and that these
recovered memories can be reliable. The goal in retrieving these memories
is to retrieve them without distortion. Very strict procedural guidelines
are imposed by the courts before evidence is allowed.
Although different states have different
statutes governing the admissibility of evidence derived from Forensic
Hypnosis, enforcement agencies recognize the value of unblocking those
memories that can give the information needed to fit the final pieces
of the puzzle in place. In Pennsylvania, any memories that are brought
up before the actual hypnosis starts are admissible
in court. If a fact that comes up during hypnosis is used by detectives
and is confirmed, then that evidence is acceptable in court
